ScionHealth is recruiting for a Vice President Liability Claims to join our team!Candidates who reside in Louisville, KY or Nashville, TN areas are preferred. Remote options might be considered for the right candidate.

Job Summary

The VP Liability Claims oversees and directs all functions of the Liability Claims department.Oversees the administration of professional and general liability claims and full budget responsibilities.Provides legal and operational advice on claims and insurance matters. Interacts with domestic and international insurance markets, actuaries, as well as the company’s captive insurer.Preferred locations are Louisville, KY or Nashville, TN (remote options might be considered for the right candidate).

Essential Functions

  • Directs staff in liability claims administration, including identification, investigation, analysis, evaluation, negotiation and management of potential and actual claims.
  • Identifies issues requiring legal counsel; reviews and advises on defense and settlement strategies.
  • Oversees financial and insurance record keeping in claims database(s); ensures availability of data in required reports; ensures the Company’s compliance with statutory reporting obligations.
  • Analyzes monthly claims activity reports and chairs monthly meetings to discuss claims activity with executive level management.
  • Provides coverage directives under the Company’s captive insurance policies.
  • Handles insurance disputes with reinsurers and excess carriers and retains coverage counsel, as necessary.
  • Oversees the selection, effectiveness, and efficiency of preferred defense counsel and holds group meetings with preferred counsel to develop defense strategies, set expectations for counsel, and provide updates on company changes.
  • Ultimately responsible for review of all loss reserving on covered claims.
  • Actively participates in industry meetings aimed at initiatives to reduce the cost and risk of claims, particularly in high exposure areas of the country.
  • Assists with insurance matters, including actuarial studies to forecast losses and insurance policy language.
  • Assists with the claims related activities, including development of, and training on, risk management policies and procedures.
  • Assists with review and recommendation of physician candidates for inclusion into the insurance program.
  • Provides counsel on matters related to claims handling under facility management agreements of disclosure of claims histories in managed care applications.
  • Oversees and manages the administration of the Liability Claims function, including full budget and staff responsibilities.Ensures employees receive training, development, coaching, and motivation for effective performance and retention.
  • Regular and reliable attendance; approximate percent of time required to travel: < 20%.

Qualifications

Education

  • Juris Doctor’s degree preferred (in lieu of a JD, we will consider candidates with 10 years of increasing experience in a professional liability claim setting with responsibilities matching the Essential Functions below).

Licenses/Certification

  • Member of State Bar preferred

Experience

  • 5-7 years of litigation management experience, preferably medical malpractice claims management experience with exhibited knowledge of insurance coverage and reserving.
