Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Laboratory Medical Director and Laboratory Director, Supervisors are expected to be decisive leaders with superb time management and record keeping skills. Laboratory Supervisors are responsible for the organizing and oversight of daily laboratory operations. They manage staff, maintain policies and procedures to ensure quality and compliance standards are followed. Supervisors maintain effective interdepartmental and Provider relations. They execute work assignments and additional tasks as directed by the Laboratory Director.

Essential Functions 

  • Supervises the work of laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine and specializedtechnical procedures, including planning laboratory work, evaluating work performed, reviewingtest results and handling procedural and technical laboratory problems.

  • Develops and implements quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures,proper function of laboratory equipment and compliance with federal regulations; prepare and maintain applicable records.

  • Establishes and maintains instrument maintenance procedures; assists in instrumenttroubleshooting.

  • Purchases or directs purchase of laboratory equipment and supplies.

  • Prepares technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results;coordinates the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends andappropriate recommendations or conclusions.

  • Selection of the test methodology that is appropriate for the clinical use of the test results

  • Verification of the test procedures performed and establishment of the laboratory's testperformance characteristics, including the precision and accuracy of each test and test system

  • Establishing a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed and establishing theparameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensuring that these levels aremaintained throughout the entire testing process from the initial receipt of the specimen, throughsample analysis and reporting of test results.

  • Resolving technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken whenever testSystems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

  • Responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptablelevels of analytic performance are maintained.

  • Ensure that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken andthe test system is functioning properly.

  • Reviews test results to ensure quality control adherence and accuracy as needed.

  • Identifying training needs and assuring that everyone performing tests receives regular in-service training and education appropriate for the type and complexity of the laboratory servicesperformed.

  • Evaluating the competency of all testing personnel and assuring that the staff maintain theircompetency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately andproficiently.

  • Monitors Laboratory budgets, revenue, capital and operational expenses, sufficient staffing andany other plans for allocation of fiscal or other resources relating to the scope of servicesprovided.Assigns staff to duties and oversees performance of tests.

  • Assists with staffing coverage as needed by completing laboratory testing/system training andmaintains competency as applicable for areas of oversight. Establishing a Performance Improvement program to monitor data related to organizationalprocesses and outcomes of laboratory testing.

  • Ensures enrollment and participation in an HHS approved proficiency testing programcommensurate with the services offered.

  • Assures that all laboratory services are operated within strict State and Federal requirementsand standards.Assures that all laboratory services are operated within accreditation body requirements andstandards (ie Joint Commission).

  • Participates in all accreditation surveys (ie Joint Commission).

  • Must be accessible to testing personnel and/or Lab supervisors where testing is being performedto provide on-site, telephone or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems inaccordance with policies and procedures.

  • Conducts job responsibilities in accordance with the standards set out in the Company's Codeof Business Conduct, its policies and procedures, the Corporate Compliance Agreement,applicable federal and state laws, and applicable professional standards.

  • Promotes adherence to the Company's Code of Business Conduct and the CorporateCompliance Agreement by monitoring employee performance and identifying and responding tocompliance issues.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations:

  • Effective interpersonal skills to work with all levels of staff. Good administrative, communicationand organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of the theory and application of laboratory methods, current laboratory facilities,methods, equipment, instrumentation, materials and ability to perform standardized biological,chemical and microbiological examinations independently.

  • Working knowledge of TJC, CLIA, OSHA and state requirements.

  • Knowledge of management and administrative functions, laboratory operational systems, andprofessional and accreditation standards.

  • Ability to make and record scientific observations accurately, prepare and present scientificrecords and reports and observe safety precautions and practices.

  • Ability to direct and coordinate the efforts of laboratory personnel; to establish and maintaineffective working relationships with administrators, clinicians, faculty, and students; to develop,evaluate and administer laboratory objectives, policies and procedures.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient and/or employee information to assure patientand/or employee rights are protected.

  • Good knowledge of computers and applications for laboratory use.

  • Knowledge of public health laboratory laws and regulations

  • Must read, write and speak fluent English.

  • Must have good and regular attendance.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited institution.

Certification:

  • ASCP/AMT certification is preferred

Experience:

  • Requires 5 years of clinical laboratory generalist with at least 1 year of lead or supervisory experience.
